Power Brokers: How Israel Negotiates With America

Born and raised in the US, as a young man Gershon Baskin moved to Israel where he has been working on peace betwen the Palestinians and Israelis for the past 30 years.  He has a column in the conservative Jerusalem Post.  He has served as an advisor to Prime Ministers Yitzhak Rabin and Ehud Barak.  Most recently, he ran for a seat in the Israeli Knesset (Parlament).

Baskin talks to ILLUME about the special relationship between the U.S. and Israel and if this relationships gives Israel an unfair advantage in any future peace talks, and why the U.S.'s role as mediator is key to any future peace.


Head of Amnesty International - Irene Khan

She is the first Asian, the first woman, and the first Muslim to become head of Amnesty International, one of the world's largest human rights organizations.  During a recent visit to the San Francisco Bay Area, Irene Khan spoke to ILLUME magazine on the issue of Islamic law (Shariah) and its compatibility with democracy and human rights. She also discusses the growing of human rights violations of Muslim-Americans in the United States post-9-11.
