A jet plan making an emergency landing crashed in northwestern Iran, killing 72 people and injuring 33 Sunday evening.  The Iran Air passenger plane was heading to Orumiyeh from Tehran when severe weather conditions led the pilot to attempt a landing in a snowy field.

All 12 crew members on board are believed to have died, according to CNN and Heydar Heydari, a Red Crescent rescue official said that the death toll was likely to rise.

Rescue workers struggled through deep snow, dense fog, and darkness to get to the accident site in order to aid victims.

Iran’s air industry has been a source of concern for years, mainly because airline companies are operating American-made aging airplanes purchased before Iran’s 1979 revolution.
