Johannes Mehserle apologized publicly for the first time for killing 22-year old Oscar Grant on a BART station platform New Year's Day 2009.  In a hand-written note penned on the Fourth of July, the ex-BART cop recalls Grant's last moments and final words. "For now, and forever I will live, breathe, sleep, and not sleep with the memory of Mr. Grant screaming 'You shot me.'"

The letter, which Mehserle addressed to the public, says he hopes the day will come "when anger will give way to dialogue," but understands that "a daughter has lost a father and a mother has lost a son."

Mehserle offers no explanation of his intent to pull the Taser instead of the trigger of his gun, something he and his attorney have claimed repeatedly throughout the trial.  He simply writes that he is sorry and sad that his "actions cost Mr. Grant his life" and tells how he tried to put pressure on the bullet wound to stop the bleeding.

Grant's uncle and an attorney for his family said that if " Mehserle were genuinely sorry, he should have said so long before now."

Mehserle, however, says he wanted to but was hindered by death threats toward his family, including his new-born son.

The letter was released Friday by Mehserle's attorney Michael Rains, one day after a jury convicted his client with involuntary manslaughter.  Mehserle will be sentenced in Los Angeles Superior Court in September.

Did you guys cover this at all? I mean did you really give Oscar a FAIR representation? Who cares aobut this cops apology... a life was taken for nothing. Face down in teh concrete, hands cuffed behind his back and a 200 lb cop sitting on him.... what more was necessary? even getting shocked would have been overkill..... why post this killer so called apology.... he is sorry... a sorry representation for how those hired to "protect and serve" exact their own ideas of justice at the continued expense of black and browns everywhere
