Alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev has been indicted on 30 counts earlier today.

A federal grand jury has indicted Tsarnaev, charging him with using weapons of mass destruction in the April 19 bombing, which left three people dead and over 260 injured.

The indictment is based in an apparent confession by Tsarnaev, which he reportedly left in a boat where he was found hiding. The confession reads in part:

"I don't like killing innocent people," and "We Muslims are one body, you hurt one you hurt us all," according to the indictment.

He also allegedly wrote "Stop killing Muslims and we will stop."

This is the first major step in the trial of the younger Tsarnaev. The older Tsarnaev, also allegedly complicit in the Boston attacks, died in a hail of gunfire with police shortly after the Boston Marathon bombing.

The indictment references Inspire, a magazine published by Al Qaeda, which describes how to make pressure cooker bombs. Two pressure cooker bombs were used in the Boston attacks.

The indictment also states that the Tsarnaev brothers used the Internet to order parts to create the pressure cooker bombs.

A grand jury indictment is a key phase of a trial. The grand jury indictment doesn't necessarily establish guilt, but it does show that enough evidence exists for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to face trial.

Other evidence cited in the indictment points to the visit by the Tsarnaev brothers to a firing range a few weeks before the attack, where they worked on target practice.

Tsarnaev is a native of Russia. He and his family hail from the Chechnya region, which has long faced bitter war. Tsarnaev spent a significant period of his life in the United States, living in Massachusetts.
